Fractional Operator

Help businesses become easier to operate by improving the systems behind the work.

BHN Fractional Operators are experienced independent professionals who work with businesses to improve operations, develop and implement systems, strengthen workflows, document processes, manage improvement projects, and reduce unnecessary operational dependency on individual people.

This is not a traditional employee management position. Operators focus primarily on how the business operates — its systems, processes, workflows, responsibilities, information, tools, controls, and execution.

What you may work on

Examples of the work Fractional Operator assignments can involve.

  • Workflow design and improvement
  • Standard operating procedures
  • Process documentation
  • Operational systems
  • Roles and responsibilities
  • Accountability systems
  • Scheduling and capacity
  • Information flow
  • Handoffs between departments
  • Inventory or resource systems
  • Project management
  • Performance tracking
  • Operational dashboards
  • Technology implementation
  • Automation opportunities
  • Quality-control processes
  • Owner Dependency reduction
  • Bottleneck removal
  • Implementation of BHC Treatment Plan priorities

Assignments vary by business and scope. An Operator is not expected to perform every function listed above.

Manage the system, not just the people

Strong operations are not created by constantly supervising people. They are created by building systems that make expectations, responsibilities, information, and execution clear.

BHN Fractional Operators primarily improve the operating system around the people doing the work.

An Operator may coordinate employees, contractors, vendors, or specialists when required by an assignment, but the core purpose of the role is not traditional personnel management.

Where Operators enter the BHC process

Operators generally enter when BHC has identified work that needs to be implemented or managed.

  1. Business Health Review

  2. Business X-Ray / Diagnostic — if needed

  3. Recommended Next Steps

  4. Treatment Plan

  5. Fractional Operator / Specialist Assignment

  6. Implementation

  7. Measurement & Monitoring

Operators should not normally be sent into a business with the vague instruction:

“Figure out what's wrong and fix everything.”

BHC defines the problem, expected outcome, scope, or diagnostic need before assigning work whenever reasonably possible.

Example

Reducing Owner Dependency

A Business Health Review and Operations X-Ray find that a business owner personally handles scheduling, purchasing approvals, customer escalations, and several routine decisions.

BHC determines that excessive Owner Dependency is limiting growth.

A Fractional Operator might be assigned to

  1. 1Map the current workflows.
  2. 2Identify which decisions can be delegated.
  3. 3Create responsibility and approval rules.
  4. 4Document repeatable processes.
  5. 5Implement a scheduling or workflow system.
  6. 6Train the appropriate people on the new process.
  7. 7Measure whether owner involvement decreases.

The Operator's job is not simply to tell the owner:

“You need to delegate more.”

The Operator helps build the system that makes delegation possible.

Independent professional opportunities

Fractional Operators are independent providers within the BHN Professional Network. They are not employees of the client business simply because they are assigned to work with that business.

Depending on the engagement, an Operator may

  • Work remotely
  • Work on-site
  • Use a hybrid arrangement
  • Manage a defined project
  • Implement a specific system
  • Support several treatment priorities
  • Provide fractional operational leadership for a defined period

Assignments should have a defined

  • Scope
  • Expected outcome
  • Deliverables
  • Time commitment
  • Compensation
  • Reporting structure
  • Start/end conditions where applicable

Operators can review an available assignment and decide whether to accept it, subject to BHC network rules and agreements.

Nothing here implies guaranteed assignments or guaranteed income.
